Our Netherland Dwarf Bunnies Mars and Jupiter

Mars and Jupiter Out in the Garden
Our first bunnies were Mars and Jupiter, who were netherland dwarf bunnies. They were brothers and while they looked very much alike as babies they had very different personalities. Jupiter was the calm and considered one, he was a lovely gentle bunny. Mars, on the other hand, was a bit bonkers. He was very unpredictable, one minute he was all sweet and lovely and then he’d growl at us and sometimes lunge at us too. He was never vicious, and he never actually bit us, but we did keep our distance when he was having one of his grumps. He was sometimes rather grumpy with Jupiter too, but Jupiter never seemed to care.
Mars Went a Bit Mad
When we got Mars and Jupiter they were babies and they lived together happily until about 4 months of age when they hit adolescence. Mars became very aggressive during this time and we had to separate him and Jupiter. He also took to attacking our feet and ankles. None of the books we had read had warned us that there was even the slightest chance the bunnies would fall out, so it came as quite a shock. As new bunny parents we weren’t prepared to have to separate the bunnies and poor Jupiter ended up living in a large cardboard box with a wire lid. He was still allowed to play in the garden during the day as we kept Mars separate by shutting him in the run we were making for them. It was in no way ideal, but we made do.
Mars and Jupiter Back Together

Mars and Jupiter Bunny Brothers
We had to wait a few weeks until Mars was old enough to be castrated, but once the deed was done it was like someone had flicked a switch and he calmed down again. Only a couple of days after their operations and Mars and Jupiter were able to live happily together again, which was a huge relief to us.
Once everything had settled down Mars and Jupiter became inseparable. Mars followed Jupiter around like he was his shadow. Whether they were laying down, causing mischief, taking a nap or nibbling grass they were always together. It is hard to think of one of them without the other.

Sadly Mars & Jupiter are no longer with us, but they were beautiful boys and we did love them very much.

Hello Lindsay,
I just recently bought my first two bunnies last week (Putt and Poof). The pet store owner checked and said that they were both male dwarf bunnies. I’m going to bring them both to the vet soon but I was wondering how long until bunnies mature? They run around my bed chasing eachother and hopping everywhere! Its so adorable! I bought Putt first for my girlfriend and then the next day bought PooF so he wouldnt be so lonely! =)

Hi Keryna,
Your bunnies are adorable :-)
Bunnies reach puberty at about 4 months of age, though like people they are all different.
Bunny adolescence lasts about a year, by this time they are usually fully-grown and their personalities have developed. That doesn’t mean that they won’t still run around and play games, or lose their sense of adventure.
Lindsay.
